Performance management refers to using information on performance to guide decision making on future goals, plans, and institutional actions. It is a continuous process of translating overall goals into individual actions and outputs, or aligning strategic goals with intermediate outcomes and activities at all levels within the organization (e.g., teams, individuals). Basically, performance management follows the Plan-Do-Check-Act Cycle. The first step is to define the organization’s mission and to establish its strategic performance objectives. The next step is to establish performance measures based on and linked to the outcomes of the strategic planning phase. Following that, the next steps are to do the work and then collect performance data (measurements) and to analyze, review, and report that data. The last step is for management to use the reported data to drive performance improvement, i.e., make changes and corrections and/or “fine tune” organizational operations. Once the necessary changes, corrections, or fine tuning have been determined, the cycle starts over again. Performance management links strategy with execution. First It helps you to assess whether strategy is properly executed, second it provides further insight into the way it is executed.
